I was referred to the Maxillofacial department, Clinic 8, Addenbrooke's Hospital by my local NHS Trust with an increasingly debilitating condition resulting from a salivary gland stone. From the outset, the doctors & clinicians I saw at Addenbrooke's were polite & friendly; they listened to what I had to say. The various departments that I attended worked well with each other; test results from scans and x-rays were provided straight away (no having to wait for results or "come back another day."). Everything was business-like. It quickly became apparent that the staff held my consultant, Mr Vijay Santhanam, in high esteem. Mr Santhanam proposed surgery for my condition and took great care to explain the procedure; I was pleased to accept. I have had surgery previously and knew what to expect. However, on this occasion, before being anaesthetised, Mr Santhanam gathered his team around, introduced each member to me and asked me to explain to them all what my operation would entail and what I hoped would be achieved. This was remarkable. I felt everyone was involved; they had met me and I was not just another nameless patient. It was very reassuring. My operation was a total success. I had no pain, very little discomfort and no temporary or permanent problems that can arise, arose. The scar was so neat I could barely see it after a few days when the dressing was removed. I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude enough to Mr Santhanam and his team.

I recently had surgery and Dr Santhanam was the surgeon, with his team did this. My whole experience with Dr Santhanam has been great, he explains thoroughly in a clear manner what exactly happened with the operation, the outcome and what needs to be done next. It is clear that Dr Santhanam has excellent communication skills and a gentle informative approach to his patients. I also had some questions prepared and Dr Santhanam was very helpful and was able to answer all of my questions. I liked that Dr Santhanam was happy to listen and answer my questions and concerns. Naturally I was a little nervous prior to my appointment, but once seeing and speaking and listening with Dr Santhanam, it soon became apparent that I was worried unecessarily.

Was really calm and confident. Didn't sugar coat how the recovery would be after surgery, answered all questions and explained all the medical terminology. Was really friendly and very upbeat bedside manner.

Mr Santhanam was excellent at explaining and making sure I understood how the operation was going to take place. I felt in such safe hands during the operation and was so very impressed with how calm everything was even though there were several doctors attending lead by Mr Santhanam who took such great care of me and time in giving me the best result. I am so grateful to have had the moh operation and the following reconstruction by Mr Santhanam couldn’t have asked for more. The only little suggestion I would have is not to let the patient see the picture from the moh operation as I found that a bit upsetting .
